I got a text from my husband. “Manal, you are divorced, ” it read. “Your papers are in the court of Khobar.” I was divorced in my absence, just as I had been married.

About This Quote

In the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, we read that God creates man and places him in a garden to tend it. God commands Adam to eat from every tree in the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. For not eating from this tree, Adam and his wife Eve are expelled from the garden and must spend time in a state of exile. Some people might take this as an example of bad parenting: “Don’t let your kids do something you don’t want them to do.” But I see this story as an example of “divorce by omission.” Eve and Adam remain in the garden, yet they do not eat any fruit from that one tree that would have warned them against sinning. So, rather than actually telling them what to do, God leaves out the part about not eating from that one tree—and then, when Adam and Eve get divorced, he goes ahead and does what he was supposed to do: He tells her to divorce him.
